History of Andheri, Mumbai
The oldest settlements in and around Andheri were those of the East Indians, the natives whose villages survive in Marol, Amboli Chakala, Gundowli, Saki, etc. Another concentration of the native East Indians was located on the former Island of Versova, also known as Vasave. In the early history. Since 1734 Mumbai and its nearby area was under the control of Portuguese. Mumbai called as Island . It was gifted to the Queen of England in the year 1760. The Vashi creek is situated in North side also Mahim Causeway is lying on the South side. On the western side, there is Arabian sea and eastern side, boundary of Thane District is administrative unit forms the limits of Bombay suburban District known as Salesette and it aslo a part of Goa which was under the control of Portuguese upto 1771 the Britishers took over control of the region of this area.
Since 1871 Thane district was carved out of the east side of Konkan and Portion of Bombay Island then known as Taluka South Salesette. Total 50 villages from Taluka salesette were withdrawn and independent when Bandra Mahal was created. In the year of 1920 the salesette Taluka was divided into two part known as South Salesette Taluka and North Salesette Taluka. Basically salesette taluka consisted of 84 villages which were situated from Bandra to Dahisar and kurla to Mulund. Also In the year of 1920 the Mumbai Suburban District was created consisting of 84 villages of South Salesette Taluka. Mumbai Suburban District and South Salesette Taluka was converted in to Andheri Taluka.
The popular Ganesha temple, Shree Vanchasiddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir, created in 1926, also contributed to the settlement of Andheri.
In the 1950s the English built the Versova Causeway (the Versova Road) between Andheri on Sashti Island and the islet of Versova. The area on both sides of this causeway were rapidly filled in to develop areas now known as Dhake Colony, D.N. Nagar, Four Bungalows, Seven Bungalows, etc.
The five buildings of Dhake Colony were built around 1950, and they served as a landmark until recently. The area is now known as D.N. Nagar
In the year 1962 some villages from Borivali Taluka and some villages from North Salesette Taluka were withdrawn and two separate Taluka known as Andheri and Kurla were created.
Andheri is a suburb of Mumbai city. It is also a railway station on the Mumbai Suburban Railway, Western line. It is the fifth suburb among the Western suburbs. Like many other suburbs and areas of Mumbai, Andheri too is divided into an East and a West section, separated by the railway line.
One of the earliest colonies is the Dhake Colony on Versova Road, West Andheri. .
