download (8)The 9-days Navratri festivities which begins September 29, will last until October 7, 2019, and is considered one of the most celebrated Hindu festival around the world.

The celebrations include the pooja, music, dance, festivities, prasad, and fetes which envelope the people across different religion.

As the story goes, the festival is to celebrate the victory of good over evil – It is the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana and Goddess Durga Maa victory over the demon Mahishasur.

Navratri is popular for its traditional dance forms known as   ‘Dandiya’ and ‘Garba’ which is played to foot-tapping beat across the country.   The Dhol (Drum) beats with the dandiya (sticks) colliding to produce a uniform rhythm adds to the real essence of Navratri, with special folk singers brought in for the occasion.

The costumes are generally multi-colored embroidered choli, ghagra, bandhani dupattas with mirror work and heavy jewellery for the ladies.  The men are equally dressy in special kedias and turbans. These days trending are a fusion of indo-western wear.

Celebrities hosting public Durga Pandals are also gaining popularity across the city which will witness some of the who’s who visiting these pandals for ‘darshan’ (offering) and even do ‘seva’ (serve) to appease the Goddess.

images (21)The festival is celebrated with much grandeur in different parts of the country, which lasts for ten days and nine nights.  Each day is devoted to different forms of Goddess Durga and is denoted by nine colours. During this festival, devotees observe fast and celebrate it with much grandeur. Special foods are prepared through the nine days, according to the colours to celebrate Navratri.

The food is generally devoid of Onion or Garlic. Popular food prepared in the households observing the special fast include the Kesar kheer, Sabudana khichadi, Makhane kheer, Motichoor ladoo, Dry fruits, dairy products, Aloo ki sabzi, fruits are popularly consumed during the fast.

Music is the key to the celebrations and the music industry is never too far behind to cater to its audience either with the devotional tracks or a fun-filled song for the dandiya beats to go on.
